Sketch

I begin with an enlarged hand sketch template of the subject from a photograph.

Then by using different pencils,  I utilize a "layering" technique which allows me to capture the tonal difference in the hair and skin. 

Finishing touch

The last step is the most important and time consuming. I add additional layers of graphite and then blend them together until the skin tone is just right.
